Keeping your gun secure in your vehicle is just as important as keeping it secure in your home. You want to make sure that thieves or other criminals can’t access your gun if they happen to break into your car.

This gun safe is light. Less than four pounds. But has all the basic protection you need to store a pistol in your car or truck. As with any lock safe, if you want the fastest access to your firearm, you will probably want to insert the key while you are in the vehicle, and remove it when you hop out.

This box is small enough to fit into some glove boxes and most center consoles, so hiding the safe from anyone peeking through the window is straightforward. The concealability comes at a cost, though. The profile dimensions are 7×5.25 inches. While that should be sufficient for most full-size pistols, longer barrels aren’t going to fit. Having room for a back-up magazine will be another issue. For under 30 bucks, this one is worth taking a look at.

A bit on the bulky side, the best place to mount this safe is probably under the dash or somewhere behind the seat for easiest access, as it won’t play nicely with glove boxes and center consoles. While it might fit when closed, it opens to a larger dimension, and if there is something in the way, getting to your weapon when you need it could prove troublesome.

That said, this is a very sturdy box to hide your weapon in, and permits access by either key-pad entry or a traditional override lock. The four large buttons are easy to find with your fingers, and your weapon is exposed with the handle facing you, as the foam inside this case acts as a holster.

The compactness of this safe is partially because the foam padding inside is a bit on the skimpy side, only half an inch thick. The container itself is decently heavy 16 gauge steel. The key lock leaves something to be desired, one step up from the locks you find on filing cabinets. But for what it is, and the price, it serves its niche very well.

The interior padding is nice, stopping the gun from sliding around inside the box, and roomy enough to keep your weapon hidden with an extra mag or two.

The override lock is a higher-quality tumbler style, not something easy to pick. If drilled and mounted, it would be very hard for someone to rob your weapon from the vehicle. Another model is available with a biometric lock.

While at first glance, this looks like a safe better suited to in-the-house duty, it’s actually a really convenient solution for a vehicle.

The interior is big and roomy, but if you have a deep well in your center console, you can mount the box there and use it not only for hiding your weapon, but any other small valuables you would prefer a would-be thief to have access to without taking the whole car with them.

Your gun is going to jiggle around inside with hard stops, so whether or not to keep it holstered in the box, engineer a solution inside, or simply keep the chamber clear until you need it, this is a road-block to overcome. Depending on your specific needs, this safe could be the perfect solution, or a pass, but it’s definitely one you should look at before deciding.
