At eight to ten inches of eye relief, you can definitely mount this scope far enough forward on your rifle to turn it into an adequate scout scope. At low power, you get plenty of field of view, with a twist to high power, you are still looking at a bright enough picture to focus on targets at greater range. The mil-dot reticule is a huge help when ranging targets quickly.

Mosin Nagant 2.5×30 Illuminated Scout Scope

This is a wonderful combination for outfitting any rifle. For around a hundred dollars, you get everything: scope, rings, and a rail mount. Just add rifle. 2.5x is considered low power, and could theoretically be used as a close range assault aiming reticle.

The 30mm objective is almost too much light at this range, maximizing the brightness to the point of overkill, but it won’t hurt anything. Just overly bulky. But hey, it doesn’t really hurt anything, and keeps the scope from blacking out, so why not?

Leupold FX-II 4×33 mm Scope

4x magnification, and all the objective you need to maintain a bright picture in low light. Having no zoom option built-in means less moving parts and less things to go wrong from heavy recoil. It’s also short. Too often I see scout rifles with a monster scope that stretches out over the barrel.

This is an aesthetic point, but the 6” tube is small enough to stay out of the way of more brush than your typical scope. Less material also means less weight, which won’t throw the balance off as much.

Burris Scout 2-7 x 32 Ballistic Plex Scope

This is a wonderful scout rifle. Tons of eye relief, up to 21 inches. You could mount this to end of the barrel and still see a clean picture at 2x. It’s fogproof, waterproof, and shockproof, all wonderful qualities when you are out in the brush. It’s even coated for glare resistance, and added bonus, but if you’re worried about glare, I would still invest in a shield for the front lens.

2-7x gives you a full range of magnification, from accuracy at 200+ yards to a wide field of view to asses the situation in front of you, the glass Burris uses is terrific, as are the coatings, allowing maximum light transmission. It comes with a hefty price tag, but when you want top quality, you need to invest a little extra.

Leupold 119675 VX-R Scout Metric FireDot Scout Rifle Scope

This is probably a bit closer to what Jeff Cooper had in mind when he was dreaming up the perfect scout rifle. It’s not the lightest scope in the world, but it provides a super low magnification while still giving you more range than other low magnification scopes. It goes up to 5x, suitable for tight targets at 200 yards and popping man-sized targets out to 500.

The light gathering ability isn’t as much as I prefer (I like 7mm exit pupils) at high magnification, but it’s more than enough to do the job. When combined with the awesome lens coatings, the picture comes in crisp and bright. There’s a reason that so many owners refer to it as the perfect rifle scope, if you can afford it.
